Gambled on an old heat pump this past summer

When it comes to placing bets, I’m generally not one to wager.

  • I’m just not built for taking chances.

So why I decided to risk our summer comfort on a heat pump that I knew could fail, I still don’t understand. That episode certainly reminded me that I don’t have the nerves for gambling. Yet, I took that huge gamble on that old heat pump and it sure didn’t work out. I knew better than gambling on anything much less the quality heating and air of my house. Although during the summer, the heating certainly wasn’t the problem. Our HVAC technician was out to do the air conditioning tune up last spring. This is when he told me that the heat pump was about to be done. I tried to pin him down on how much time I had left but of course he couldn’t be that specific. He did tell me though once it broke, it couldn’t be fixed again. That made a lot of sense and it would have made more sense to just replace the heat pump. We had actually started saving for an HVAC upgrade years before. But that money got reallocated to other priorities. In order to save a bit more money, we decided to roll the dice on the old heat pump last summer. We even did the best we could to reduce the load on the heat pump. We made it all the way to mid August before the thing gave out. The worst part of the whole thing was we had to wait 3 weeks before we could get new HVAC equipment due to supply chain issues. I’m sure glad to have the new heat pump and not have to risk that sort of HVAC comfort again.
