It can happen that suddenly; you get lost and end up dead in one evening from what started out as a fun trip.This is what almost happened the other evening while doing a little trip to the hot water springs on the border of France.

I’ve faced death a few times in life and this one was right there with the other times and I somehow got out of this one alive too.

I am going back to my little town tomorrow, however I will for sure remember this fun trip and all of the silly things that came with it. In just two afternoons I’ll be working at the heating, ventilation, and A/C supplier doing my normal heating and cooling unit repairs and thinking about this trip and the people I was with. I will be taking another trip over the Atlantic Ocean soon and heading for another adventure back in my hometown. My neighbor is a new business owner back home and was asking me if I could help him do some commercial A/C installations and I told him yes of course I could. I can tell him all about my fun trip to the mountains with my friends and how I almost ended up being a landmark on that mountain for other hikers to take pictures of. I have a new appreciation for heating and fireplaces in homes, after being so cold for so long on that mountain that one night. I guess next time I go hiking I am going to bring a compass and a tent, so if I get lost I can just make a little home and sleep for the evening. Oh, and I would also bring a gas space heater too!

I just took a trip to the sizzling hot springs and the people I was with and I lost our heat on the way here.

That was nothing compared to what almost happened on the way back though.

I took off early from the sizzling springs because it was getting dark and the path back was quite treacherous. After about more than four or five minutes of walking back I realized I was going the wrong way, so I turned around and went back to meet the group. When I got back though, the group was gone and it was just me by myself. My heating, ventilation, and A/C rep neighbor had my iPhone and that was going to be my light to see, so then I was lost with no light and no iPhone to call. I kept calm, however I knew I would not survive the sub zero evening with no heating component or tent to keep warm. Luckily, I spotted some lights above me to the left, far above me, and I yelled and whistled and they heard me because the lights were flashing at me. I just wanted a sizzling hot fireplace in the lodge with a big comforter wrapped around me. So I ran and caught up with the group, and the people I was with and I made it back to safety. I thought about that mountain when I got to the cabin apartment and realized if I did get lost, and had no type of oil furnace or space heating component to keep me warm, I would have ended up frozen by the time morning rolled around. It was eighteen below zero that evening, as I heard on the weather forecast the next morning.

All of us are now in a car taking a little trip to the thermal baths on the Spanish and French borders. I guess the people I was with and I will be on the road for just an hour or so, and I am going to try and knock out these articles so I can take in the view of the mountains on the way back. The local supplier where I work at my beach apartment offered me some afternoons off from my duct cleaning job, and I am enjoying them to the fullest. Today is our last full morning of this trip and it should be a fun one as I have never been to a thermal bath for a swim. I normally swim in the cold sea back home, so this will be a welcome change for me. Come Monday, I will be back in the heating and cooling corp doing my job once again and remembering this fun trip. It is kind of cool that I can do my side job with these articles and make a bit of money while all of us are on the road. This world has changed a lot in the past 50 or so years hasn’t it? You used to have to work for the local supplier each morning and get there by horse and carriage in a cart which has no heating, ventilation, or A/C system. Now, I am working in our heated car, traveling at 65 miles per hour, and having fun while making money on the road. The temps are below freezing outside, however with the amazing HVAC furnace in this car, the group of us are all comfy and cozy on our journey.

The pandemic legitimately took a toll on our economy and many of the small corporations in my town did not survive the lockdown.

The pandemic was an unprecedented event that nobody saw coming and some supplier owners were left to fend for themselves.

There was some help from the federal government in the form of a stimulus, however some corporations still suffered grave consequences and had to permanently close their doors. While some corporations did not survive, there were others that thrived and even saw growth during the pandemic. The heating, ventilation, and A/C industry has been steadily growing over the years, however it did see significant growth during the lockdowns. With more people working from home, it meant they were using their heating, ventilation, and A/C units more than before. And as with any equipment, the increased use led to more malfunctions. Not to mention that while in quarantine, the people I was with and I experienced some of our warmest weeks, so a lot of heating, ventilation, and A/C units broke down during that time. Personally, I have an older heating, ventilation, and A/C unit, and sure enough it broke down about three weeks after I began to work from home. The capacitor, which is an electrical component responsible for starting the heating, ventilation, and A/C unit, malfunctioned. Prior to that incident, I had never had an issue with my unit. Turns out that the capacitor is sensitive to heat and will fail from direct sun and if the component is running too hard. So, it was inevitable for that malfunction to happen while I was in the pandemic. Therefore, if my component broke, there were tons of other units that experienced problems during that time. This means prices increased for heating, ventilation, and A/C companies all over the country.

I grew up in the northern section of the country where the temperature gets pretty cold while in the winter season.

And when I was a child, our apartment was consistently sizzling and toasty in the colder season.

All of us used a radiator that was connected to a boiler as our heat source during the winter. Unfortunately, the apartment that we lived in did not have central heating or cooling. In fact, most houses and buildings in the town did not have central heating or cooling equipment. When the houses and buildings were constructed, central heating, ventilation, and A/C was not a usual thing placed inside those homes, along with the radiator that we used for heat in the winter. We had window A/C units that we used to keep cool in the summer months. Back then, life was much simpler, and I was grateful that my apartment had heat and A/C. I have since moved out of that city, so I have been using a central heating, ventilation, and A/C component ever since. And of course, it’s a luxury to have a cooling and heating unit in my home. For many of those residents that still live in the town that I grew up in, they don’t have the same luxuries. In fact, unless the building or beach apartment is a newly built structure, chances are the residents are still relying on a radiator for heat and a window A/C unit for cooling in the summer. When you live in the city you get used to those options, as it wasn’t until I moved out that I realized how much more comfort a heating, ventilation, and A/C unit provides for a home.

With Christmas around the corner, I am getting happy for the season, as every year my parents host lunch at their home.

This means that all my siblings and their boys will gather to celebrate the holiday.

There will be over 12 people in the house, and it will be noisy and chaotic, however my parents absolutely love it. They enjoy having their grandboys running throughout the apartment on Christmas morning and they like it when we all light the fireplace and sit around it while we watch the boys open their gifts. Sitting by the fireplace has become a yearly tradition for us and it is something that the people I was with and I all look forward to. I prefer hearing the crackling of the flames and I love the sizzling and cozy feeling I get while kneeling in front of it. It’s a wood burning fireplace, so my siblings and father make sure that it is clean before they light it. And truthfully, my parents barely use the fireplace when they are home. They use it twice per year, once for Thanksgiving and the other for Christmas. So, the fireplace is not filthy or filled with soot or buildup, however they like to be safe and will wash it out before and after each use. They also check the chimney and the cap to make sure neither of them have any issues. Once they are done checking it, they will light the fireplace so that we all can like it. While the fireplace adds ambiance to the home, it is also a source for heat. When we have it lit, the people I was with and I consistently adjust the temperature on the thermostat. I am looking forward to kneeling around the fireplace again this year.

With the rising cost of everything, I have decided to conserve energy in my beach apartment so that I could save some money, but my plan is to use a space oil furnace instead of using my central heating.

I must admit that I am a bit wary about using an oil furnace because it does have a bad reputation for causing fires.

Of course, a lot of times those fires are perhaps due to negligence or misuse of the oil furnace, but that doesn’t stop me from being worried about them. Modern space heating systems should be used as a supplement to central heating and not as a main source of heat, but many people use them as a primary way to heat their homes. I understand why because it costs a lot more money to heat our homes in the wintertime. There are two types of space heaters: kerosene and electric heaters. Kerosene heating systems are a bit more dangerous and tend to be the cause of most of the furnace related fires. However, if an oil furnace is used properly, there should be little to no problems. But you should never leave an oil furnace unattended, and you should consistently keep it in an open space away from furniture or anything hanging like curtains. Although a kerosene furnace has the capability of heating an apartment because it can produce up to 22,000 BTU of heat, it is not smart to use the oil furnace as a main heating source. Personally, I will be using an electric space heater because the thought of having a kerosene burning unit in my beach apartment does not sound like a nice plan to me.
