Replacing a non-vented gas heater with a ductless mini split

My house is big and old with high ceilings and big windows.

We are gradually making home improvements but the projects are expensive and time-consuming. We are working on replacing windows, installing a new roof and adding insulation. Despite having a forced air furnace, certain rooms are drafty and often chilly. There are simply not enough vents to handle the demand of the local winters. The temperatures below zero and brutal wind chill are a big challenge for more than half the year. The kitchen in the house is especially chilly. At one point, we invested into a pellet stove that was a disaster. It required constant refilling and re-lighting. It was messy, ugly and took up quite a bit of space. I was very unhappy with it. We eventually replaced the pellet stove with a ventless gas heater. The ventless gas heater was a single stage model that could only operate at maximum capacity. It would blast heated air until it brought the temperature of the room up to the thermostat setting and then shut off completely, creating unpleasant temperature swings. The unit was extremely sensitive to the slightest buildup of dust. A red warning light would start blinking and the heater would no longer shut down. It would pump out hot air non stop, making me concerned about it overheating and becoming a safety risk. Just recently, I finally invested into a ductless mini-split. The indoor air handler is mounted up high on the wall, unobtrusive and quiet. It features inverter technology that allows the system to automatically adapt output to maintain a very consistent temperature. The ductless heat pump provides especially energy efficient heating and cooling. It keeps the kitchen perfectly comfortably year round.

A whole-home humidifier improves comfort and air quality

Living in a cold weather area makes my family heavily reliant on the heating system.

  • We run the furnace approximately eight months per year.

The outdoor temperature is typically below freezing and often dips into the negative digits. Cold air doesn’t retain as much moistures as warm air. The conditions tend to be extra dry. Inside the house, with the vents supplying a steady stream of hot air, the lack of humidity becomes a problem. Static shock, chapped lips and frizzy hair are consequences of overly dry air. There’s the potential for damage to hardwood floors, doors and moldings due to the wood drying out and cracking. Headaches, insomnia, sneezing, coughing, congestion and aggravated symptoms of asthma and allergies can be blamed on a lack of humidity. It can exacerbate concerns with psoriasis and eczema. I bought a few portable humidifiers, but they were a lot of work for very little reward. The answer was a whole-home humidifier installed into the heating system. It works to introduce moisture into the air as it passes through. I chose a steam-style humidifier that works by converting moisture into steam, creating a very healthy and natural moisture. Because of the humidifier, I’ve been able to lower the thermostat setting by several degrees. The house feels far more comfortable and yet the furnace doesn’t need to work as hard. I’m also saving quite a bit of money on my monthly energy bills. I hope that reducing wear and tear on the heating system will help it to be more reliable and last longer. We are enjoying healthier indoor air quality.

Sitting in the tire place next to the heater

I’m that guy who lets their tires get bald before they get new ones.

  • I am that person that is reckless on the road and it’s definitely not a good personality trait.

Yesterday morning my tire pressure light turned on and I knew my tires were not in the greatest of shape anyways. I figured I’d drop 50 cents on the air machine to fill up my tire and make it another few weeks before I replace my tires. At the end of the month, I have to get my inspection done so I will have to replace them if I want to be able to use my car or I would just keep going. So getting air in my tire at the local gas station I noticed the wire was sticking out from the interior part of my tire. That is a major, horrible sign of an accident comes if the tire blows up. I called the garage that does my tires and got an appointment right away. The one thing I hate about this place is that the thermostat is obnoxiously set to a setting that is too hot in the waiting room. I know I’ll have to wait it out or stand outside. When I got there I gave my keys to the mechanic and went to the waiting room. To my surprise the temperature control in the room was spot-on great. After waiting an hour for my car to be done I spoke to the mechanic about how I liked the heater setting. He said they recently had an HVAC technician come out and install a smart thermostat. They work so much that they don’t think about the waiting room so much and this will help customers feel more comfortable waiting. I couldn’t agree more.

Only house on street that has a heater

There has been a strange thing going on my street.

  • It’s not a long street by any means, like 8 houses, but still the strangest thing is going on around here.

Everyone’s houses in the past three days furnaces stopped working. My electric furnace is still working but it’s just the weirdest thing. Were their houses built on some ancient burial grounds and somehow my house hasn’t? I see multiple HVAC van’s yesterday working on their houses. We had a “neighborhood” meeting last night to figure out how this happened to all of them but not me. Someone suggested that my boy Ricky did the sabotaging. I wasn’t going to say it wasn’t because Ricky has done some jerk things over the past year. If he went around each house and messed up their gas furnaces I would be angry and he wouldn’t see the light of day till the day I die. So during our meeting, I realized they all have gas furnaces and I have an electric furnace. There was a flood here two summers ago and after that flood, I upgraded my heater system but all of them didn’t do anything about it. Plus I have an HVAC technician come out twice a year to make sure everything is good and yet they didn’t. It turns I found out this morning after the HVAC specialist came out to their homes a lot of their furnace wires were corroded. I’m not 100% if it was all of their houses but three of my neighbors confirmed that is what the heating and cooling expert said. Well at least it wasn’t my boy but still strange it happened to at least three currently.

Playing games with the tech

My child & his friend decided that they were going to go & create a gaming room! My child is legitimately romantic about games & spends what is been hours on them.

I don’t mind my teenagers being romantic about something but I want to make sure that they’re not spending too much time on the internet & are really living life outside too.

So I do limit the hours they have to play games each week, and he came to myself and others 1 day all enthusiastically telling myself and others that he had this fantastic plan that he was going to create a gaming room. I thought it was a fantastic plan as well, he hadmentioned that he hadbeen wanting something love that to appreciate in his free time & I didn’t see any reason why he should not have it as long as he had all his responsibilities finished first. He spent the next 2 weeks carefully planning & putting together his gaming room, there was only 1 thing missing & that was when he told myself and others that every time he went in there to play any games he was sizzling all the time. He asked myself and others if I had any suggestions as to how I could keep cool. Then he recommended a zone controlled Heating, Ventilation and A/C plan but I told him a zone control heating & A/C plan was way too expensive. I told him I had a much better plan & that was to get in a window air conditioner. He was hesitant at first but I assured him that a window A/C would work just as well… Once I got the window A/C he was surprised by how efficiently it was keeping the room perfectly cool. His gaming room was complete & he was glad with the way it turned out.

Reminding myself of my Heating, Ventilation and A/C date

When it comes to Heating & I see you appointments I don’t think what it is but I consistently seem to forget, it seems love no matter what I do if they consistently seem to slip my mind.

So I was already leaving sticky notes all over the current home if it means I can remember to take care of my heating & A/C system; I used to not take care of my heating & cooling plan at all until I had a legitimately bad breakdown of my oil furnace while in Wintertide & I was left in the chilly cold separate from any heat.

That was not a fun time, I had to call emergency services if I wanted to get my oil furnace plan repaired in a timely manner. It wasn’t myself and others just being impatient either, the temperature is really dropping dangerously low & so it legitimately wasn’t an emergency if I didn’t get access to some heat & fast. The emergency Heating, Ventilation and A/C repair was extravagant & I vowed from that day forward that I would continue to make sure that my heating & cooling plan was taken care of before something love that could happen. I still sit by what I said unblessedly I consistently forget to do what I am supposed to. So I have to leave sticky notes all over the locale reminding myself and others when I have a heating & A/C appointment & thankfully that has been working. Thankfully the stick notes have been paying off well, & I have been keeping my appointments successfully.

My church needs air conditioning

I love going to church, our pastor Mark is hands down my favorite person to talk to.

He is very genuine, soft spoken and overall a great guy.

I could say I wasn’t always a person who loved going to church but when I meant pastor Mark everything changed. Not only is he a great guy but he helps many in need, does weekly fundraisers for the local children and always is there if you need someone to talk to. He loves everyone and everything. He gave his number out to many families in case they needed someone to talk to if they were struggling. The church and he is available to all. Now I can’t keep going and saying nonstop positive things because I do have one gripe and I do feel bad saying this but this man won’t install air conditioning in the church. I’m not saying he isn’t the only one but many churches won’t have one in there. There are like a hundred of us elbow to elbow standing, sitting, standing and sitting throughout the sermon. I have talked to him about it a few times because it does get hot in the church. I know overall I can handle the heat but it would be nice to be in a little comfort. I looked up the local HVAC company’s number and even talked to a cooling expert to quote it out for pastor Mark. Let’s just say it was a waste of time because pastor Mark loves the church the way it was built and doesn’t want to change a thing. So it looks like the only comfort I will have is during the winter.
