I’m a firm believer that the little things end up making a really big difference.
But that can go the other way on you pretty quick as well.
I know that a bunch of small frustrations can really end up sending me into a spiral. But the upside of small things that we work hard to remember lead to bigger results. That’s exactly what’s happened with my HVAC cooling strategy over the last three years. Of course, this is not the time of year to really be worrying about HVAC cooling costs. We’re finally now to a part of the year where the air condition has been off for a while. I love being able to walk outside and not hear a chorus of heat pumps working at cooling everybody’s house. For the last three years, I’ve been active in trying to lower the cost of air conditioning in my house. For far too long, we paid whatever the cost of cooling the house was and I just whined about it. This didn’t sit so well with me so I got proactive. The first thing I did was to seal up the house. That improves the HVAC unit’s efficiency. I then stopped the direct sunlight heating by covering the windows. But the biggest thing was getting some real thermostat setting discipline. But put together, all of that really worked. And each year I’ve added something else to the mix. Like instead of heating up the house by cooking on the stove, I cook on the grill. It’s the little things that I’ve added up over the last three years to really save us money on HVAC cooling costs.
