I had been living in the city for almost ten years now, and I still haven’t gotten used to it.
- There isn’t a day goes by that I don’t wish I was living back on the farm.
It doesn’t matter what I do, my apartment is never comfortable. I can smell the fumes of the city, and it makes me sick. I tried a portable air purification system, but it didn’t help. The odor is on my clothing and skin when I get home, and I need to wash my clothes every day and take a shower twice a day. I bought three suits so I could have one to wear, one for the next day, and have one in the dry cleaners. I just don’t like how they smell when I get home. Of course, this apartment will never really be my home. It the apartment above me is having guests, I can hear them. There is an older couple that lives below me, and they love their heat. The heat comes up through the floor. I seldom have my thermostat above sixty because the heat from their apartment keeps me warm. Unfortunately, during the summer, I need to keep the thermostat lower, because they use little air conditioning. I remember the breeze blowing the kitchen curtains during the middle of summer. We didn’t need air conditioning on the farm. The only odor was when my dad was working in the fields, and they were far enough away that you had to be outside to know he was working. I am stuck in the city, and trying to figure out how to rectify it, short of moving back home with my parents.
