After 30 years in the Heating, Ventilation and A/C business, our mom Edna retired.
She moved into the suite over our garage, because she wanted to stay close to her family.
We encouraged her to move down south and enjoy her retirement. But mom wanted to stay here. Partly it was about the kids, and partly she wanted to keep an eye on us. We took over the business from her, and although she’s retired, mom is not 100% retired. We don’t mind a bit, actually, because she has a wealth of information about the HVAC industry that can’t be taught. Managing a Heating, Ventilation and A/C business isn’t just about doing repairs, you also have to manage people, deal with purchasers, and spend money on all the bills. We value her wisdom. When it comes to the installation and maintenance of heating and cooling systems, we think about what we’re doing. We got certified for Heating, Ventilation and A/C work back in 2006, and ever since then we have been active in the industry. The section of the job we’re not familiar with is building relationships with Heating, Ventilation and A/C business sales reps and wholesalers. We need to learn how to generate proper invoices, and how to make sure all the Heating, Ventilation and A/C purchasers spend money in full without sending them to collections. We also have to keep the morale for the Heating, Ventilation and A/C work crews strong, so that all the people remain focused on their work. With Edna as our advisor we’re starting to make the transition from being an Heating, Ventilation and A/C tech to an Heating, Ventilation and A/C business owner. In this position, we rarely need to do any actual work at all.
