HVAC marketing wasn’t for me.

When I talked about being the owner of an HVAC company, I was thinking about all the things I didn’t want to do.

  • One of the scariest things about being a small business owner is wondering how you were going to get customers.

My wife was excited and told me I would need to do some HVAC marketing. I wasn’t interested in marketing, but she was. She told me marketing is what she went to school for, but she found me instead. She told me marketing was important. We could hire an online marketing company to advertise our HVAC company, or we could do it ourselves. I rolled my eyes and told her I was an HVAC technician and not a computer geek. She once again reminded me she was a marketing major in college. That didn’t mean she was an expert in computers. She said if I didn’t trust her, I could hire an online web development company. I was just talking about owning an HVAC company and had no real plans yet, but she was already planning for marketing and websites. I stopped her in mid-sentence and told her she was hired if I ever followed through with my idea. As it was at that moment, I was just speaking my thoughts out loud. I had no real intentions of being an HVAC company owner, and it was just a ‘what if, and sometime in the future’ scenario. My wife must have thought it was a ‘this happening as soon as possible’ scenario. You would think I would have learned fifteen years ago not to speak my ideas out loud. That’s how I ended up engaged.
