Whenever we go by a house that has furniture out on the front lawn with a sign that reads, “Free”, we usually feel bad.
It seems the furniture had been sitting out in the weather, and we knew it wasn’t worth taking home.
We didn’t know what could have been taking up space to get out of the rain, or how badly the furniture had been damaged. When we passed by one house, even though it was pouring rain, I had to stop and grab the coffee table they had sitting by the curb. It looked like the coffee table had been abandoned and meant to go in the trash, and I couldn’t let it be crushed by the trash truck. I made my husband pull over and put the coffee table in the back of the car. It was an oval table and the only thing missing was the glass that was supposed to be in the center of the coffee table. I knew I could get a piece of glass made to fit. The coffee table looked to be maple, and I thought it was pretty. When we picked up the coffee table, I realized they had laid the glass on the ground and the table was on top of it. It was etched in a rose pattern and not a scratch on it. We took the coffee table home and cleaned up. My husband polished it and place the glass in the grooves. I had to admit that my new coffee table was the prettiest piece of furniture we owned, and he agreed with me. After saving the coffee table from a doomed existence, I was even more alert to roadside bargains.
