When I was a young heating and AC repair technician, I could work from 8:00 in the morning until 8:00 at night.
- If the boss let me get 25 hours of overtime in a week, I would work the extra days.
If my boss let me work 7 days in a week, I would. I didn’t have a family or kids back then, so making money was my main plan. Over the years, the job has really worn me out. Having a family has also helped with that. I was thinking about retiring a couple of years ago because of the physical wear and tear that heating and AC repair and installation work has done to my body. I was going to get a job at the Home Depot or Lowe’s stocking shelves or helping customers find the right type of screw for the job. Then my boss at the heating and AC company offered me a cushy promotion. He thought that I was thinking about going to a different company and he offered me an executive position in the office. I will oversee the day to day activities for three of the branches in the northwestern part of the state. I would be responsible for making sure that sales and promotions were carried out and regular day-to-day managerial activities. The job came with an office in one of the heating and AC repair businesses as well as a salary. When I told my wife about the job, I thought she was going to faint. She thought that we were going to sell the house and move down south, but I’m not ready to retire yet.
