I am comfortable controlling my on heating

I do not like visiting people during the cold season.

For one, in the cold season, I have to dress extra warm because of my chest problems.

In the car, the temperature has to be right and consistent. I can control my house and the car, but not someone else’s house. Before I visit you, I have to be sure how long I’ll stay out. Unfortunately, I had to make this visit because my aunt had just given birth. I had to see my niece sooner before the season ended, otherwise, it would be another four months until I make another visit. Once at her house, I tried to take my mind off the heating but it wasn’t long before I asked her for the small heater. I am glad she understands me but the one thing she does not compromise on is the setting of her heat pump. She sits here a little lower than my furnace back at home but what can I do? Since I always bring up the topic about furnace/heater installation and heater maintenance, we go back and forth about it in our conversation. My aunt is rather old school, so she likes her things in a certain way. Her mantra is, “if it is not broken, do not fix it.” That goes for her heat and AC products too. I am not sure when she last had HVAC maintenance since her boiler repair a few months back but one thing is for sure – she frowns upon anyone who comes in for any repair work , including the HVAC repairman. It doesn’t matter whether the technician is from a certified heating dealership or heating business she has worked with before. Everyone is a suspect to her. No wonder she has never gotten around upgrading to hybrid heating or fixing, let alone considering hydronic heating I mentioned a while back. Anyway, I was just to see my niece and off I left after a few hours.

My neighbors are hoarders and the situation with furnace/heating installation is a challenge

Now I started connecting the dots when the HVAC repairman mentioned he hasn’t been to the next door a while to perform HVAC maintenance yet the heater already failed.

I live in a quiet neighborhood where every resident minds their own business. The most conversation I have heard with my immediate neighbors is probably a brief greeting across the parking lot. In the evenings, you can see one or two neighbors jogging or brisk walking and that’s it. Now, back to our house, we rarely leave the house, and this habit has led me to know every corner of the house and what’s in it. Even our basement is sparkling clean and neatly arranged. Yesterday, a mouse ran past me while I was taking a leak and scared me. I finished up, looked at its escape route and informed everyone else. A close inspection led us to a trash pile up from one of the neighbors. We are not nosy people but the first glance into his home after knocking at his gate confirmed our fears. Having had a small talk and taken the days that follow to monitor him, we realized we were dealing with a hoarder. Now I started connecting the dots when the HVAC repairman mentioned he hasn’t been to the next door a while to perform HVAC maintenance yet the heater already failed. We experience very freezing winters and I wonder how he copes with no functioning furnace, boiler repair, or heat pump. In fact, I doubted if any heat or AC product was functioning at this point since he wouldn’t let any heater maintenance take place, even with a court order to let in a licensed heating dealership. But since the law always wins, the council got an eviction order that made the neighbor change his mind and let cleaning, repairs and furnace/heater installation take place by a designated heating business. With time, the tenant was expected to conform to having hybrid heating or hydronic heating in place to match up with regulatory requirements.

My dad’s collector items includes rare heat and AC product

Before I was born, my dad was an HVAC maintenance professional who was very much content with working full time and taking care of his family.

For a family of four, he didn’t struggle to keep the family happy because there was so much work to go around.

Growing up, I didn’t take much notice of what was going on with his job until I was in junior high. Slowly I started noticing dad bringing home parts of furnaces or heaters. Some were relatively new but most were dated and probably required heater repairs here and there. As a renowned HVAC repairman, I just assumed most of his clients trusted him to take home whatever he could. At some point, out of curiosity, during the weekends and holidays I started taking my dad on rounds for boiler repair or regular heat maintenance around the neighborhood. It is then that I realized that he had a heating dealership. He specialized in heating, so a lot of his work revolved around furnace/heater installation, heat pump repair and maintenance, and generally anything to do with heat and AC products. On the side, he was trying to partner with an old colleague to register a separate heating business that handles hybrid heating and focuses on hydronic heating as an option for traditional ACs. As impressive as his track record was, I drew his attention to several equipment he had collected over years in his garage that held a lot of value. He didn’t know he could sell them, so I looked around for auctions and professional collectible agents that could shed some light on the collectibles and sure enough, he had enough to generate enough capital to jumpstart his side partnership business. At the end of it all, I was just glad I could be of help.

A visit from my friend who lives in the tropicals prompts a heat and AC product crash course

Jack is quite afraid of the cold.

  • Convincing him to come over for a week’s visit this winter was something I didn’t expect to pull off but here we are.

He has been here before but just on a layover. Now I know where he is from, they do not rely on heat and Ac products so much but here, it is the order of the day. Their seasons are relatively friendly and they can survive most days without heating or any major HVAC maintenance. The first thing he inquired upon arrival is the reliability of our heater, the biting cold got to him fast indeed. Not to leave him with any doubt, I gave him a quick overview of our equipment and showed him how to operate the one in his room. We recently renovated our home, so most of the equipment was new. The furnace/heater installation was quite a lengthy process especially after realizing that the living room furnace we bought was the wrong specification. The heating dealership that we have been relying on for our heater maintenance assumed our living room was still the same size, that’s why he made the mistake. Jack talked about hydronic heating he read about somewhere but I told we couldn’t incorporate that into our home yet. The best we could do is a hybrid heating upgrade that eliminated the cost of boiler repair, hence fewer calls to the HVAC repairman. As for the old heat pump we had, that found its way to dad’s garage. I am glad Jack didn’t find a hard time during his visit and the highlight of it all was a visit to the local heating business to learn a few things about ACs.

I loved the new air purification system.

I asked if he could give me something on his letterhead that would show my husband how important the air purification system was for our daughter.

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic began, I had been asking my husband for a whole home air purification system. He thought I was panicking over nothing, and the air purification system would just be one more expense we couldn’t afford. I thought the air purification system would be something we could always use to keep our air clean and free of dust and germs. He looked into it, but told me it was too much money at this time. It is now three-years later, and I still want a whole-house air purification system. Our daughter is three and she suffers from severe allergies. It doesn’t matter what season it is, she is coughing, sneezing, and has asthma attacks. The doctor says it is common indoor dust that is worse than anything else. He suggested we get an air purification to help her breathe better. I wasn’t sure if my husband was going to agree unless he saw a prescription from our doctor. I asked if he could give me something on his letterhead that would show my husband how important the air purification system was for our daughter. He wrote up an order on his prescription and told me if my husband wanted something more clear, I could bring him to his office. When my husband saw the paper, he spluttered and said that was baloney. I called the doctors office, and they told him to come in and the doctor would have a discussion with him this afternoon. I know we got the air purification system for our daughter, but I am loving the new air purification system as much as she is.

I wished I had air conditioning in the camper.

I was sure there was air conditioning in the camper when we bought it.

  • It was a two-person camper, but other than a bathroom and shower, it had all the amenities of a large camper.

My husband and I looked at it three times before paying the man for the camper. It was driveable, and small enough we could use it for travelling around while camping. We got more than 15 MPG. While visiting our family down south, we decided to camp out on the beach. They were always going on about how cool the beach was at night. They always grabbed their heavy sweaters, pulled on their jeans, and hung out on the beach well after midnight. We thought it would be nice to spend a romantic night on the beach in our camper, before we went home. We were only there until after midnight before we had to head to a hotel. It was hot and humid. Even with the windows and door open, we couldn’t get enough air to make us comfortable. We wished we had air conditioning and couldn’t think of anything else. We drove off the beach and headed to the nearest hotel where they advertised air conditioning, a view of the beach, and a free continental breakfast. We figured we could use the breakfast and the air conditioning. We planned on having the air conditioning checked out as soon as we saw a service station that offered AC servicing. If they can fix the air conditioning in a reasonable amount of time, we may go back to the beach for the night, or we may just head home..

I couldn't see the thermostat.

I knew my eyes weren’t as good as they once were, but when I couldn’t see the numbers on the thermostat, I was shocked.

I thought about cleaning the face of the thermostat and hoping it was smeared, but that didn’t work.

I rubbed the thermostat with a dry cloth, but it was still hazy, and I couldn’t tell what the temperature was. I called my husband and asked him to bring a new thermostat home with him when he came home from work. I didn’t want to disrupt his work for long so I thanked him and hung up. Five minutes later, he called and told me we had replaced the thermostat less than a year ago. He wanted to know what was wrong with it. I told him the face was hazy and I couldn’t read the temperature or figure out where the thermostat was set. He laughed and asked if I had put my contacts in? I said nothing, and now I was fuming. His response was a simply, well?. I told him I had my contacts in, but I couldn’t see the face of the thermostat. If he was through tormenting me, just because I had forgotten my contacts once, I was going to go back to my own work. Ten minutes later, I was looking in the bathroom mirror and realized I was looking hazy. I checked to make sure I had my contacts in. That’s when I realized I had put my contacts into the wrong eyes. Once I switched them around, I could see the thermostat perfectly. Now, I had to call my husband back.
