The HVAC technician was offensive.

I am used to men ogling me at times, because of my unusual measurements. Most people don’t say anything, but you can see their looks when they think you aren’t looking. I know I am overly large in some areas, but since I’m not a celebrity, it isn’t acceptable. My husband was working last week when the HVAC technician arrived to work on my air conditioning unit. He didn’t speak to me or look me in the eye. He was was looking at my body and making very little sense. I was so upset that I wanted to cry. I was offended by his lack of decorum and professionalism. I told him my name was Courtney, but I wasn’t a Kardashian. He knew what I was referring to and turned red. I asked him to please check my air conditioning unit and give me a bill. He headed outside, but he was still looking in the kitchen window to see if he could get a glimpse of me. When my husband got home, I told him what happened. He told me he could understand the HVAC technician’s response. He thought I was gorgeous and he couldn’t take his eyes off me. Why would I think he was the only man who appreciated my appearance. I began to cry and told him the HVAC technician’s actions were offensive. My husband offered to call the HVAC company and complain if I thought his actions were so egregious. I wouldn’t call his actions egregious, but I would call them offensive. I couldn’t help what I looked like, and I didn’t like being ogled.

Do I need a new HVAC system, or just AC?

I have this little bus that I use when taking my kids and their friends to their various activities.

I picked up the mini-bus at an auction, and it is the best thing I ever bought.

It has HVAC and it gets 30 MPG in town. Last week, I was taking a group of kids to the pool for swimming lessons. I had the air conditioning on, but they weren’t getting cool air. I dropped the kids off and told them I was going to stay with the mini-bus. I called the service station who sent someone to the pool to look at my air conditioning. I asked if I needed more coolant in the air conditioning unit, or if I was in need of a new HVAC system? The service tech said he couldn’t be sure. He was going to add coolant to keep the air conditioning working until I got the kids home and brought the mini bus into the service center. I thanked him, but the air conditioning wasn’t working nearly as well as it had been before this happened. I dropped all the kids off at their homes, including my own, and went to the service station. I kept hoping I would just need some work done on the air conditioning unit, but that’s not what happened. I had an enclosed HVAC system, and although you could repair either part of it, you had to replace everything if replacement was necessary. I didn’t want to know how much it would cost, but told them to replace the HVAC system.

My car’s HVAC system quit working.

I love my car, but every time I turn around, something is going wrong with it.

Last month it was new brakes.

The month before that I had to get new tires. My transmission was acting up. The sparks plugs and wires needed replaced. Now, I am being told my HVAC system needs replaced. I live in the desert, and it is hard to go anywhere if you don’t have air conditioning. I was on the interstate heading to work when my HVAC system died. Traffic was at a stand still, and opening a window was useless. The sun was beating in through the windshield. I was praying for a freak wind storm or downpour, but it was highly unlikely. I had to sit in my car until I got to an exit that offered HVAC service. Ten miles and half an hour later, I was pulling a service station. They told me they could work on the HVAC system, but there was a problem. They had a wait of at least half an hour before they could get me in. At least half an hour was more than two hours, and I had to call work and tell them I wasn’t going to make it in. they only had it in the garage for ten minutes when they told me they had to order the HVAC system and it wouldn’t be in until 4PM that day. I wasted an entire day waiting for the HVAC system to be repaired. I was about to ask what else could go wrong, but I didn’t want to tempt fates to answer me.

No one told me what the HVAC stood for.

I know it sounds naive and maybe even a bit stupid, but I didn’t go to HVAC certification school because no one told me what the HVAC stood for.

  • I’m not sure if they thought I was kidding when I asked them why they used initials? I didn’t know and I wanted an explanation of what I was signing up for.

The men who were at the HVAC booth were clowning around with the guys who were standing there, and may have thought I was with one of them. I was sure I didn’t look like the type of girl who would hang around with jocks. After standing there for almost ten minutes, one of the men offered me an application, but he was laughing when he handed it to me. I went home and told dad how condescending the guys were at the job fiar, and told him what happened at the HVAC desk. He told me what HVAC stood for. When he said it was heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, I felt as stupid as I must have been acting. Why didn’t they say it was furnace and air conditioning repair. I had never heard the acronym before, and all I wanted to know was what it stood for. I still want to sign up for classes so I can work on furnaces and air conditioning units, and next time I’ll know to sign up for HVAC. No one will deter me from my mission, regardless of how stupid they think I am. I will be an HVAC technician, now that I know what they do.

My father told me to get a job.

My father was always saying that when I turned eighteen I had to get a job and move out.

I graduated high school and turned eighteen a week later.

He said I needed a job, and to find someplace to live. He raised me to be a man and it was now my responsibility to take care of myself. My mom looked devastated that he was kicking me out, but I understood. I had been forewarned from the time I became a teenager, and I had a plan. I had talked to my guidance counselor told him I needed a job when I was in tenth grade. He set me up with a summer job with the HVAC company the summer before my senior year. The summer job went on to being a part-time job while I was in school. I loved working at the HVAC company, and I learned much about HVAC systems. When graduation rolled around, I had more than my parents in the audience. Half the HVAC technician were there, and the owner of the HVAC company was there for me. He talked to me dad when the ceremony was over, and told him how proud he was of me, and he was sure dad and mom were even more so. He hoped dad didn’t mind him putting me in an apartment so I would be within walking distance of the HVAC school he was sending me to. Once the HVAC company owner left, Dad stared at me and asked why I hadn’t said anything to him. I shrugged and told him he brought me up to be a man.

Talk to me when you graduate from high school.

My uncle was a great guy, and I wanted to work with him when I got older. I loved how he helped people and he always did his best to make sure they were safe in their homes. Last year, I was staying at his house while my parents were on vacation, and he took me on a service job with him. All he was doing was preparing the people’s furnace for winter, but I was fascinated. I couldn’t believe that such a simple thing as he was doing, could keep a family warm and safe for an entire winter. He explained what he was doing and told me why he was doing it. He laughed when he asked what I had done wrong that I had to stay with him and aunt Janie while mom and dad went away. He thought a sixteen-year-old guy would stay alone. I laughed and told him mom didn’t trust me, and I enjoyed being around him. We were talking about his HVAC company and I asked if he would consider taking me on when I got older. When he told me talk to him when I graduated from high school; I took him at his word. Right after graduating, I reminded him about his promise to let me work at the HVAC company. He told me I could work there through the summer and if I was still interested in being an HVAC technician, he would work with dad to get me into the community college and get my HVAC certification. My excitement doubled. First graduation and now an offer of a job at the HVAC company.

I didn’t want my son to be an HVAC technician.

I never told my son what he should do when he graduated from high school, but I didn’t tell him what he shouldn’t do, either.

I wanted him to go to school and get an education.

I was hoping to see him with a career that gave him opportunities in life my wife and I never had. I hoped he would become a professional; like being a lawyer, doctor, or some other well-paying job. Instead, he went to HVAC technical school right out of high school, and he became a technician. Had I told him to be an HVAC technician, I’m sure he wouldn’t have gone, so maybe I should have told him not to go before graduating. He was stubborn, and had I told him not to go to HVAC school, he would have moved heaven and earth to get into a different school. I tried talking him out of HVAC school, but it was a futile effort. I finally talked man-to-man to my son and told him. I wanted him to go to school to become a professional. He told me to get to the point. I told him I wanted him to do anything but HVAC as a career. My dad worked in HVAC and he couldn’t keep our family in a home, or pay all the bills. I was working by the time I was fifteen, and my sister got pregnant at sixteen to get out of the house. He told me that HVAC was different now than it was fifty years ago. HVAC was a necessity in today’s world, and it gave him job security. I couldn’t believe it, but I was understanding why my son wanted to be an HVAC technician, and I was proud of him.
