One For All Air Conditioning

Since we started living off the grid, this summer has to be the most comfortable for us.

Living off the grid has been something of a lifeline pursuit that we made happen.

It was a mixture of luck and commitment coupled with persistence for this to happen. Even with all the knowledge, understanding and great planning, it still comes down to having money. I was working in a commercial HVAC company that I just had no interest in. While I was happy to perfect my skills inside the air conditioned spaces, that’s as far as it went. As you might imagine, I’m not exactly a corporate sort of person. But the money kept me there since I needed it. Then, just when I was thinking I’d never get there, someone close to me died and left me almost the exact amount of money we needed to finalize our shift to off the grid living. That’s more than a decade now and I’ve learned a lot along the way. I am now able to do all of my work from my place thanks to satellite WIFI. That was a big bonus as I would have to get to the nearest neighborhood just to get a signal to do my work. The other thing was putting in a ductless heat pump this Spring. An old acquaintance of mine is a Heating, and cooling professional who has helped me install it. Of course, I have a wood stove for heating. But having that ductless heat pump and the air conditioning this summer time was a necessary and much-needed upgrade.

It’s funny how life works out.

Of course, like everyone else, I didn’t see the pandemic coming.

But it happened and I had to adjust like the rest of the world. Almost instantly, the company closed the offices, sending us to our homes as they figured out how to operate remotely. That meant no more zone controlled air conditioners for me. And that wasn’t the best because I had to share my apartment office with the kids who didn’t want to study from a different place in the house despite having a good central air conditioning unit in our house. My wife and I were both trying to share the office in our household but our working styles clashed. Ultimately, this led me to consider making a space in the basement. The first thing I had to do though was to get some reliable heating and cooling down there. The HVAC company came and installed a ductless heat pump for me at the start of this renovation. Over the first months of that summer, I started filling out that apartment office more and more. Working from the apartment worked for me. So when the eventual layoffs came, I was ready. For years prior, I had planned to leave the company I worked for to go out on my own. This would be some kind of consultant job but more towards services. Even so, I knew that I would have to start from an apartment with a few partners. So the pandemic sort of gave me a head start on what has become a rather successful gig for me. Besides my success, I’m just super pleased to be working for myself and keeping up with my passions.

I live in a small town, and depending on how small your small town is you may or may not have a good amount of businesses. In my small town there were less than 1,000 people so we only had one heating and air conditioning business, or at least we did until last year. Last year I knew a heating and AC business came to our town and set up shop here and ever since then the main heating and AC business that was used to everybody coming to them has been competing with a Non-Stop. So ever since this new heating business came to town the two HVAC businesses have been at each other’s throats. They’re constantly competing with each other price wise and it’s actually kind of started some division in our town. Because now we have one part of the population that loves to go to one heat and AC store and the other half that likes to go to the other Heating and I see business. If you live in a small town drama spreads quickly, and apparently this trauma about who goes to which heating and air conditioning business is dividing families and friends. Honestly, I think the whole thing is ridiculous. Who cares who you buy your heating and AC products from? The main thing that I care about is that my heating and AC system works like it’s supposed to, that’s what’s important to me.

Where I come from almost nobody uses air conditioning systems. The reason that no most nobody uses air conditioning systems is because of how cold it gets where I live. When you live in a very cold climate like I do there is simply no need for an air conditioning system. Air conditioning systems are only used in climates where there is some heat that you need to cool down from and I guarantee you that where I live there is absolutely no heat they need to cool down from in fact even during the very hot summer months during the rest of the year, our summer isn’t even really much of a summer it’s like a slightly warmer winter. It’s just really cold around here and so what takes priority around here is our Heating systems. In fact there’s a lot of people that have multiple different types of heating systems in our community. So most people have a furnace of some kind as that is their main source of heating. However in addition to the furnace it’s common for a lot of people to also have space heating systems, fireplaces, and even sometimes radiant heated flooring. I even have a couple of friends that have radiated for it. It’s a whole other kind of heat source myself and it’s a pretty amazing one. I guess the point is, when you live in a really cool climate it’s important to have more than one way to heat yourself up because if one heating system stops working you don’t want to be without any heat at all. It’s always good to have a backup.

He didn’t post and checked the address that he had been given and realized he had the wrong house

What happens when someone calls you on the phone and it’s a wrong number, well if you’re like me you tell them they got the wrong number and then I move on. What happens if somebody gets the wrong number in real life? Well then the situation is a little bit different. This is what happened to me today, I basically had a real life equivalent of a wrong number. I had someone show up at my door at like 7:00 in the morning. I had woken up to some really loud knocking on my door and I quickly came down the stairs to see what all the commotion was about. When I got to the door I saw that it was a heating and air conditioning repairman and he was standing out beside my house with a toolbox in hand like he was ready to just walk right in and start working on my heating and cooling system! When I opened the door he attempted to walk inside my house and start working on my heating AC system, but I didn’t know him and I had never called a heating and I ac worker so I blocked him and asked him what he thought he was doing. He told me he was here to repair the heating and AC system. I informed him that I had never called a heating and AC specialist out, and I didn’t have any appointment with any local heating and air conditioning business. He didn’t post and checked the address that he had been given and realized he had the wrong house. I apologized before leaving. I’m glad that he was a legitimate Heating and cooling specialist, because it always worries me that some people might try to get into your house by pretending to be an HVAC worker.

Today was such a wonderful day, I had a knock on my door around 12:00 in the afternoon.

This is surprising because I wasn’t expecting anybody but when I opened the door I saw that it was a very well dressed looking young man that appeared to be a door to door salesman.

He told me that he came to my house because he was going around the neighborhood representing a local heating and AC business. He wanted to show off some of their latest and greatest products and so he offered some of them for me for free to test out! I was blown away, how often is it that you have someone to come to your door and get offered free stuff? Definitely not often enough! I asked him what kind of free stuff it was that he was offering and he offered me a free air filter and a free window air conditioning system to go with it. When he told me this my jaw dropped, I asked him if he was sure and if this was some sort of scam and he insisted that these were freebies that were being given out by the local heating and they see business. They wanted to get people’s opinions on their products because they were confident in their products. There was no reason for me to say no to getting a free window AC or air filter until I accepted and took them. Now I can see why this heating and AC company is so confident in their products because after using both their window air conditioning system in the air filter for a month I can confirm that they are great devices.

I really like my apartment, because it is close to the freeway.

It is really easy for me to get on and off the interstate.

I drive about 40 minutes to my job. I don’t mind the commute each morning and afternoon. I listen to music or talk radio in the car and it makes the drive seem like it goes by very quickly. The only time I don’t like driving to work is mornings when there are accidents. Traffic can be backed up for quite a distance. On days like that, I usually call my boss and let him know that I’m going to be late. My boss is very nice and easy going. He doesn’t dock my paycheck if I end up being late, especially because of traffic. I have been working for the owner and operator of the HVAC business near me for the past 3 years. During that time I have had a few hiccups at work. One hiccup happened last week when I went to a commercial apartment building to help a tenant with an air conditioner problem. The tenant had a German Shepherd in her home. The dog was large and looked vicious. He snarled and growled at me for 10 minutes. During that time, I did not want to move an inch. The lady finally put the dog in a different bedroom so I could get started. When I was halfway finished with the HVAC repair, the tenant went to the bathroom in her bedroom and accidentally let the dog out. The dog came running at full speed right for my leg.
