I had never had issues with air conditioning. My brothers had given me the responsibility of reminding them to call the cooling corporation and book their annual air conditioner tune-up. I also linked them up with a digital thermostat when they complained that their HVAC installation was consuming power, especially when they were not at home. However, my troubles started when I moved into an apartment that had installed a ductless mini-split system to help with indoor comfort. I had yet to use it before and doubted its capacity to keep my home comfortable. I got an a/c worker from the local indoor comfort business to help me understand it, but that did not resolve all the troubles I would encounter. My home was always humid, and every search I made about the issue led me to more people complaining about the problem. After having the air conditioner serviced several times to see if the problem could be resolved, the cooling specialist mentioned trying to find an additional dehumidifier because the unit seemed to have reached its maximum dehumidification capacity. I ended up buying it, but I wished the house had an electric heat pump like the other houses I’d lived in. I needed to understand how I had what would be considered quality HVAC but still had such issues with humidity. Unfortunately, the house wasn’t mine, so I couldn’t do whatever I wished with it, but whatever the a/c professional suggested worked well and was not too expensive. I still wonder why the landlady thought that mini-split systems were better than having a central HVAC for the five house units in the apartment block.

We desperately needed help with indoor comfort for our tiny home, but every quality HVAC we had seen at our local indoor comfort business needed to be cheaper or smaller for our space.

When I went on a business trip, I came across a different type of HVAC installation in the Airbnb I stayed in.

I remember calling our cooling specialist to ask if we could use something similar in our home without looking like an eyesore since the space is small. Unfortunately, the local cooling corporation couldn’t buy it for us, but they offered to send an a/c worker to help us if I bought it elsewhere. I had to confirm that buying it elsewhere would not affect the air conditioner service they offer and the warranty, and they said they would cover it if I bought a unit straight from a manufacturer. That’s how I ended up purchasing the ductless mini-split system with the help of an a/c professional. Then came the installation; I thought it would be easy, but all the suggested places made the house crampy. Having something jutting out of the wall separate from the storage is unsightly for a tiny space. However, I didn’t want to have trouble during the air conditioner tune-up, so I had to give in and let the experts install it wherever they felt it should be. Once it was installed, we installed a shelf and a digital thermostat right next to the unit, which worked for my home’s aesthetics. Hopefully, when I get my own space, I can install the electric heat pump or some other ductless air conditioning system for my house to avoid the ducts that I think are unsightly.

Growing up, we almost always had the air conditioning in the house running for most of the year.

But I grew up and moved to a new place where I only needed to run my HVAC installation seasonally.

The rental apartment I got had an old quality HVAC that ran out of its life shortly after I moved in. The a/c worker who came around to check on it mentioned that we could replace it with an electric heat pump, but the owner was not keen on spending that much money to help with indoor comfort. I did stay without an AC but soon needed one. I called the a/c professional who’d handled the air conditioner tune-up on the old unit before it gave up to come to assess the house for a solution that would not need extensive work. Luckily, the space was small enough and could survive with a simple ductless mini-split system, which I bought at the indoor comfort business without thinking twice. The cooling specialist assured me that it would be enough for my space, and a little research led me to purchase a digital thermostat to help with efficiency. There were more options at the cooling corporation, but they all meant spending more money which would have been needed to be more sustainable for a rental apartment. I also discovered that the air conditioner service and maintenance for my new unit would be easier and cheaper than it was with the house’s central HVAC. I kept the unit going for the two years I rented the house without encountering any problems. The owner did refund the unit’s worth when I moved and even went ahead to equip the other homes with similar systems.

This year I’m going to try to get as much house cleaning done in one month as I possibly can. It’s because I’m planning a vacation afterward and I don’t want to come home to a bunch of stress. I want to enjoy my time away and not worry about things that are lingering at home. The last time I tried to take a vacation, I had too many things pending at home when I left. I had a lot of work to do for my job that had not yet been turned in. Beyond that, the house is a wreck and I knew I had a lot of work to do. Is really stressful thinking about all of these things when I was just trying to have a good time. And ended up ruining the experience for me while I was on vacation. I definitely want to always enjoy my vacations instead. So that means getting all my house cleaning done right away before I even leave for the airport. One of the things I need to do is clean out the condensate line for my HVAC system. I kind of saline carries all the water that gets pulled out of your indoor air during the air conditioning cycle. An air conditioner absorbs moisture from indoor air as it cools it. The water then collects in the condensate pan before exiting the house via the condensate line. This prevents the air conditioner from flooding with water. However, it’s common for the condensate line to grow algae in microbial growth over long periods of time. You have to clean out the condensate line to make sure it doesn’t clog. These are essential steps for preventing any water backups inside the home.

The region I grew up in was known for its extreme weather. Not only were we living in the north where it would get insanely cold for 6 months of the year, but we also got a ton of dangerous tornadoes as well. People assume that only the plains states are the ones that get all of the tornadoes, but that’s a major misconception. In fact, there was an F5 tornado last year that almost wiped out a good section of my hometown. It managed to miss several neighborhoods and instead went into the countryside and destroyed some Farmers fields and some woods. Aside from all the crazy tornadoes over here, this region is also known for its extremely cold temperatures. Every year we would get temperatures that would drop down to 30 degrees below zero. It’s hard to survive in temperatures like this when you need to go outside and brave the cold air. We had two different heating systems back then in case one of them broke down. Not having a supplemental heating system could lead to dying in a severe situation. I feel fortunate that I live in a much more mild climate nowadays. I don’t have to worry about needing two different heating systems because it never gets down below zero degrees. Rented, we need our air conditioner regularly, but we don’t use a furnace nearly as much as I did when I was growing up. Our air conditioner is a lot less necessary than it used to be when we were having week long heat waves throughout the summer as well.

I’m really behind on my preparations for the winter. It’s because of all this overtime work I’ve had to take with my job. My boss basically told all of us that if you wanted to keep our positions that we would be working overtime for the foreseeable future. That’s really frustrating when you already need the job desperately. And when I took the job I wasn’t expecting it to turn into something like this where we would have to work overtime with no choice whatsoever. And it was sprung on us at the last minute too. Aside from lacking winter preparations in my house, I also haven’t gotten any of my holiday shopping started either. I usually like to get all this stuff done early in the winter season so I’m not left procrastinating with all of my errands. One of the biggest things I have to do to prepare for the winter season is to make sure there’s no drafts in the house. That means ceiling all of the windows and doors properly. I also have to chop enough wood for the wood stove in the fireplace. We use our wood heating system as a major source of heat for the entire house. If I don’t keep the wood chopped, I’ll have to be chopping wood out when it’s cold outside. Hopefully, I will get enough wood chopped in the next month to cover me for the rest of the winter season. I have enough fallen trees on my property to provide me firewood for the next 5 years at least. That’s a really good feeling knowing that it helps us keep the house warm during the coldest portions of the winter season.

Unfortunately, I had an issue with my air conditioner a few weeks ago and it wasn’t running.

It’s nice to finally get back to the house and relax after being away on a backpacking trip for the last 2 weeks straight. I was camping in a tent in warm temperatures because it’s the end of the spring. Typically it doesn’t get this hot until June but this year it’s been getting hotter quicker than usual. I got overheated a lot during my backpacking trip. I’m used to hiking and camping in warm temperatures, but this was a lot worse than usual. It can get really stressful trying to hike in these sorts of conditions. I kept thinking the entire time that I missed my air conditioner at home. I would imagine how cold I could get with the air conditioner when I was laying in my tent at night and it was hot outside. I’m just really happy that I’m home and I can finally use my air conditioner again. I spent the entire day just laying around in the ac. It makes me feel a lot better about everything in the long run. I don’t like being cooped up in a house with particularly hot temperatures when I could just use an air conditioner instead. Unfortunately, I had an issue with my air conditioner a few weeks ago and it wasn’t running. I had to call the air conditioning company and have them send out a technician to fix the system. Thankfully I don’t have any more issues with my air conditioning system. And since my air conditioner was still under warranty, the work was done for free. I’m happy to have a working air conditioner again.
