Working Inside Today to Avoid the Daytime Heat

It is 1pm right now and I just went out to check the mail and I felt like I was melting like a candle.

I think the temperature is 100F with the humidity so I plan on staying in the house till about 5pm and then going out to do some paver sealing.

I’m going to sit in my air conditioned room for a couple hours and write these articles with a small fan blowing beside me to keep me cooler. I am here for a little over two more weeks and then will have a drastic change when I move back to my flat in Europe with a whole different life going on over there. I have central heat and air conditioning over there, unlike a lot of my friends, and am so grateful for it. I don’t know why a lot of people over there live without AC in the summer when it only costs about $50 more a month to run it constantly. I guess they are that broke that they can’t even afford an additional fifty bucks a month, or actually fifty euros a month to be correct. I guess most of them have space heaters for the winter but I bet a lot of those heaters are very inefficient compared to my new central HVAC system. I am lucky that my landlord bought the new unit for my place a year ago and that he got one of the best and most efficient systems on the market. I will for sure need to clean my HEPA filter when I go back.

Today is Going to Be Filter Cleaning Day

I am going to be doing some work around the house here at pop’s house for the next two weeks to earn some extra money so I can wait for my investment money to go back up before tapping into it

It reminds me of that old Carly Simon song called Coming Around Again when I think that it is time to clean my HEPA filter again. Time is such a weird concept to grasp, it seems to pass by really fast and other times it feels like molasses trying to run out of the jar. I guess my HVAC system alert telling me it is time to change my HEPA filter is a good reminder of how quickly three months slips away. My plan is to play and have fun for the rest of my life while being responsible and kind to people, and also kind to my heating and air conditioning system by getting it cleaned and maintained regularly by myself and the HVAC company. I am going to be doing some work around the house here at pop’s house for the next two weeks to earn some extra money so I can wait for my investment money to go back up before tapping into it. I need to work on the heat pump and maybe put in a new one because my stepmom said that the heat in the winter is not coming out as warm as it used to. I think that I should call the HVAC business down the road to do this work because I am not certified in HVAC and may do more harm than good trying to help out my stepmom. I will try to get them on the phone now and see if they can come out to take a look at it soon.

Tuesday Morning Rolling Around Again

It’s just one big wheel we are all running on isn’t it? The weeks keep spinning by and the years keep rolling around and by us like cars flying by on the highway.

I can see how time passes when I am gone for a long time overseas and then come back to the states.

It’s almost as if I were frozen in time and then thawed out a few years later to see all of the changes, this is how it feels when I am gone away for a few years at a time. My HVAC repairman has put on some pounds, some babies are now in school, and a few friends and family have passed away since I’ve been gone. My HVAC system needs a tune up as I haven’t done anything to it since I’ve been away and the people renting just change the HEPA filter and that’s about it as far as maintenance with the unit. I guess the whole goal in life is to just have fun and enjoy the ride. I have a part time job at the local business helping organize books and stock the shelves, but as far as work goes that is about all I do nowadays. The rest of my time is spent doing the fun things that bring me joy and freedom like playing beach volleyball, hanging out with friends, and drumming with my band. I still do some HVAC repair work around town when someone needs help, but other than that I don’t have any dreams of becoming “rich” because I already am.

I Think We Need a Whole Home Air Purification System

We run the air conditioner a lot during the summertime in this house but I have noticed that the ppm meter I have shows that the air quality is still not that great.

I bet we need some kind of air purifier to help clean the air better, but I really have no idea which kind to get as there are so many different kinds on the market.

I will have to do some work to find which brands are the best before deciding to buy one. There is a local business in our town which sells them too so I may just shoot down there this week and talk to the guys there. I think they are a newer company and I am sure they have good prices to keep up with all of the competition in the area. I just want to have clean air in my house so that I don’t have to suffer from dust allergies anymore. My wife also has allergies and is tired of taking meds to keep them at bay. I want to get a system with a HEPA filter in it so I need to make sure about that before buying the system or I will have to shell out more money for a HEPA afterwards. I set aside some money for things like this so it isn’t going to kill me to spend some money on making the air quality better in our house. Also, my friend is an HVAC rep and I can ask him if he knows anything about the air purifiers on the market.

Going to Bring my Djembe to the Beach at Sunset

I need to start practicing my drumming skills because I am going back to my flat overseas and my bandmate is going to want to start playing with me as soon as I land. We play music on the paseo right in front of the beach and have so much fun doing so. We also play in bars and clubs sometimes for money but I would rather be outside playing so I can see nature and interact with the people walking by. There is no air conditioning in a lot of these bars too, which makes it uncomfortable in the summer to play inside. A lot of bars don’t like to use their climate control systems because they are afraid it will cost them too much money. There are a lot of poor people in my town overseas, which makes it less of a rat race than in the states, but we don’t have all of the creature comforts that they have in the USA. We do have one club which we play at that likes to keep the place nice and cool in the summer so we usually play there when we want to get out of the summer heat on the streets. In the winter a lot of the places have small space heaters, usually gas heaters, so playing inside is nice because it can get quite cold outside. I can’t wait to go back but I am also trying to enjoy my time here while I am visiting my friends and family. Life is good and I am thankful for it.

Acclimate to the heat to save on HVAC cooling

Living in the region where I live, there’s just no getting around the heat.

For folks in this region, the air conditioning comes on in March and goes through November.

That’s just a big chunk of HVAC cooling. And to some degree, HVAC cooling is for sure necessary. Honestly, I’m from here and I know I couldn’t manage the summer heat without the use of HVAC cooling. That said, I also come to HVAC cooling from a bit different perspective than many in this area. It’s a fact that the outside temperatures can start getting in the low to mid 80’s in March. But I certainly don’t go right for the thermostat. Instead, I tend to opt for fresh air. This allows my body the chance to acclimate to the higher temperatures. Going straight to flipping the thermostat over to cooling doesn’t allow for that to happen. And that’s the problem. First, once that summer heat really settles in, it makes the summer heat feel even more oppressive. But mostly, if you start with air conditioning in early spring, it’s going to cost you. By the time the summer gets here, there have already been some HVAC costs. But because one isn’t ready for the heat, body wise, the summer gets even more expensive. If you get accustomed to the heat a bit during the spring, it’s much easier to have a thermostat setting in the low 80’s during summer. And that’s how you save money on air conditioning around here. Plus, that 82 degree thermostat setting feels super cool when you acclimate to the heat.

Copper crooks can destroy your HVAC

I just didn’t see the HVAC cabinet outside my house as a possible target for thieves. I knew it was full of expensive HVAC equipment but I had no idea that thieves would be so brazen as to steal it. I just didn’t realize that there are people out there so desperate they are willing to destroy my HVAC unit just to get their hands on some copper fittings. It’s really sort of hard to believe when you consider that. There are thieves that will not walk up to your house and destroy the HVAC equipment for some copper. Again, these are desperate people since they are bypassing thousands of dollars worth of heating and cooling components just to get to that bit of copper. But second hand HVAC equipment is much tougher to get rid of than copper. Still, it just blows my mind what these thieves do. First, they cut the power to the HVAC and then it’s just on. They yank out all this expensive HVAC equipment so they can get down to the copper fittings. I saw one house that this had happened to and it looked like the HVAC cabinet just blew up. There were HVAC equipment parts just strewn all over the yard. This is also smash and grab job so it goes fast. I’m actually taking the step to protect my residential HVAC equipment. There is a cage one can buy that fits over the HVAC cabinet and locks down to the concrete pad below. It’s still hard for me that it’s come to that but I’m for sure now locking my HVAC equipment up.
