One For All Air Conditioning

The very thought of selling our house scared me.

But when our youngest took off for college, it was time to have that conversation. They were early discussions along the line of what we might do and all the possibilities. Yet, it was clear that just living in that big house without the children was dumb. The heating and cooling costs alone were just not sustainable for just two people. The fact that we are seeing a white hot sellers market around here didn’t hurt. But the HVAC equipment put it all over the top for us. We put the old HVAC unit in when we first bought this house 25 years ago. So we were sort of expecting the HVAC equipment to give up at some point. But the fact that the HVAC technicians warning about the HVAC unit and sellers market coincided perfectly. Still, I was not looking forward to the hassle of replacing the HVAC equipment. But I shouldn’t have worried really. The HVAC company we’ve used since we first had the HVAC unit installed was on point when it came to doing it again. The HVAC professionals made it so easy to see and understand all the HVAC technology upgrades that have happened in the past 25 years. And they were able to make it so easy to choose the right residential HVAC for us by listening to our heating and cooling needs. Actually, having the heating and cooling equipment replaced was the easiest thing about getting the house on the market.

I think I’m not far from just giving up on commercial air travel.

During the last 2 decades, I’ve gone from anticipating a business trip to dreading it and that’s all due to air travel.

Honestly, most of my travel would be within a day long drive so I could indeed do without air travel. I know that air conditioning in my car would sure be better than what I just got on a recent flight. Lack of good heating and cooling on planes has been a problem for me for some time now. Perhaps it’s from having so many more seats added to these planes. Now the HVAC equipment has to work overtime to compensate. There was a day when you could sit in a seat on an airplane and actually be comfortable. The quality heating and air was great as was the seat. These days, I am sweating through my shirt due to lack of HVAC cooling and the seat itself is terribly cramped and uncomfortable. Throw in all the cancellations that come with summer weather and it just might change this summer. I actually think I’m going to drive more and only fly if it’s more than a day drive. Like I said, I can count on the heating and cooling equipment in my car. Plus, I can then stay at the interstate hotels that I love. Again, this has to do with HVAC equipment. Those mid level hotels always have the best HVAC equipment and I can count on them. There’s nothing worse than being stuck inside a hotel room without air conditioning the night before a big meeting.

I don’t hate technology.

I just mostly resist getting more because it makes me feel so stupid during the learning curve.

But of course, I rely on technology every single day of my life just to live. I’m hesitant to add more tech gadgets to the house though. That’s even true when it came to the HVAC technology. We’ve been really lucky to live in a home that has just great quality heating and air. That’s something you definitely need around this region. Well, maybe not so much the heating but definitely the cooling. Our winters are so mild that my heat pump really doesn’t do much but sit there during the winter months. However, there are always cold snaps where having the thermostat flipped to heating really comes through. Still, it’s the cooling here. I know people who flip the thermostat to HVAC cooling in March and leave it there until Thanksgiving. I’m not quite that intense when it comes to air conditioning. But believe me, when the summer gets here, I pour on the HVAC cooling night and day. There’s just really no other way in this place. It’s just that sort of hot. Of course, I do my best to rein in the thermostat setting to save money on all that air conditioning. But this summer, I won’t have to do that. No, I didn’t hit the lottery, I added HVAC technology. With the new smart thermostat in our home, I just let it take care of things itself. And the HVAC technician suggested that I’ll see even more savings with the HVAC thermostat than I did without it.

There are times when I just am stunned by how things take care of themselves. I thought the older I got, the more wise I’d get as well. Why am I less assured of that now that I’ve gotten to this stage in life. It’s no much good to siet around stressing about that really. Maybe it’s just that there is so much I have to deal with. It feels like the world sped up to a pace where I’m not able to keep up. Now that I’m not stuck inside the air conditioning for my house due to the pandemic, I’m getting more of a new normal thing going on. Just having the ability to go inside the HVAC cooling of the grocery store without feeling as though I’m risking my life is a great change. And the office is reopened. I’m just a year away from retiring so it’s been a nervous few years. Once we were all sent home from the zone controlled HVAC of the office due to Covid, I was on pins and needles. Honestly, I wasn’t sure that I’d ever experience that zone controlled HVAC comfort again. I was sure that they were going to replace me to save money and shed salary. But that’s not the way it worked out and I couldn’t be happier. When the office opened up again, I was still in my office and I got the assurance that this would be the case until I retired. We’ve even started a succession plan for my replacement. I’ll miss the zone controlled HVAC and my colleagues a lot. But I think it sure will be interesting to go after different passions once I leave that zone controlled HVAC of the office for good.

I love where I work and that has a lot to do with why I’ve been there for two decades.

The company took a chance on me when I was young and I’ve repaid that gesture with commitment and loyalty.

I never saw the inside of a college classroom when I was a kid. I spent the first couple of years out of highschool, outside the air conditioning working landscaping. But I had some advanced computer classes when I was in highschool. So I applied to see if I could get a job once I figured out that spending the summer outside without HVAC cooling wasn’t for me. Initially, I didn’t meet the criteria for the position since you had to have at least an Associates Degree in computers. Yet, the management made an exception for me given the classes I’d taken in highschool. It was a win win for both of us. So that’s why it had been really hard to see the company I loved be so mismanaged locally over the past five years. I even started looking for a new job. Thankfully, the management team was replaced from top to bottom before I put in my resignation. And the changes to the office came quick. The HVAC company came out and installed zone controlled HVAC throughout the office. From there, we saw our desks, chairs and the entire office get an upgrade. Honestly, I found the HVAC equipment upgrade to be the best change outside of getting new management. These days, it’s much easier to come to work this summer knowing I’ll get great HVAC cooling all season.

I missed the lecture about indoor air quality.

• When I think of air pollution, that’s all outside.

So when I learned about the connection between HVAC equipment and the air we breathe inside, I was a bit stunned. Again, I just had no idea there were concerns when it came to indoor air quality. This assumption was based on the fact that people were always told to stay indoors with the smog was bad when I lived in the city. And air pollution was the stuff coming out of exhaust pipes and factories. It was not something to worry about inside the house. Plus, there was an air filter that I changed each month that definitely showed signs of dirt. So I just figured the HVAC equipment was cleaning the air. That’s not the case at all. To start, there are loads of things inside our homes that affect the indoor air quality. There are so many synthetics, from carpet to furniture, that are giving off airborne contaminants. Then throw in the pollen, pet dander and all that comes to indoor air quality that isn’t great. And that air filter I was changing each month was designed to catch the big stuff so it doesn’t hurt the HVAC unit. All the other stuff is getting blown around the house when the HVAC unit kicks on. So the very first thing I did was to upgrade the HVAC air filter to a HEPA filter. These HEPA filters remove more than 99 percent of the airborne contaminants that attack my respiratory system. It’s made a tremendous difference as I save my money to go all the way with a whole home air purification system.

It has incredible HVAC equipment with all the latest HVAC technology

It’s not easy to fail. I know it’s part of life and there are just things that are completely out of our control. I certainly didn’t lose my job for performance reasons. In fact, over the first four years, I got great reviews and was on a career track inside the zone controlled HVAC of my former workplace. But Covid happened and I was one of the unfortunate ones to be laid off. It wasn’t a huge surprise to me that I might not get back inside that zone controlled HVAC when the company started lay offs. I was one of the last ones in so I was one of the first ones out. Again, that’s just the way it goes. But I tried to hold on inside the not so great air conditioning of my apartment that first summer of Covid. I found a few online gigs that brought in some money. By August, it was clear that the zone controlled HVAC in the office would not be anywhere I was going back to. I’d heard nothing from the company and nobody else who got laid off did either. So when the lease on my apartment came up, I had to let it go. That meant going home to mom and dad. That’s a tough thing to swallow for a person like me. I’ve always be a goal oriented person who strives for and achieves success. Thankfully, on my first big fail, my parents were kind enough to let me stay with them in their new place. It has incredible HVAC equipment with all the latest HVAC technology. So while my prospects took a ding, the heating and cooling sure was an upgrade from the apartment that I had to move out of.
