When to call the HVAC business

When we were growing up, our home had an electric furnace, and my father actively took care of it by changing the filter and duct sealing.

The HVAC duct, in my view, was the least complicated part.

We, however, left the air conditioning tune-up to the cooling specialist. It was our bonding time when he was not busy with work. I finally moved out and was living on my own. I continued with our routine, and I had been doing it long enough with my father that even now that we are not living in the same house, I could do it independently. However, I minimized the amount of DIY fixes I did on my ductless heat pump and called the cooling expert in case something was wrong to maintain indoor air quality. My parents had long upgraded to a dual fuel system with a zone control system. On the other hand, I had contacted a new contractor to install new air conditioning equipment. Now I have a mini-split air conditioner. One Saturday afternoon, I embarked on my usual HVAC care. The first thing was to switch off the unit. I then cleaned and changed the air filters because they were due. I cleaned the unit’s coil and condenser to prevent my system from having any issues before it was time to have the new contractor do the biannual service. Since our installation no longer included ductwork, my father and I discussed how our different temperature control systems work every once in a while. Other than resetting the thermostat, there was little we could do. It was always a good conversation starter between the two of us.

My neighbor's noisy heat pump

I was watering my herb garden when I heard my neighbor calling over the fence, asking me to go to her house.

It sounded urgent, so I turned off the tap and headed to her house.

When I got there, she looked calm, indicating that it was nothing serious. I could tell that she was baking something because the aromas were heavenly. She told me that she had heard strange noises from the outside compressor. Her house was fitted with a mini-split air conditioner unit in each room, enabling a zone control system. She assured me that none of the inside teams was making any strange noise. However, the temperature control system was in excellent condition, and the readings on the thermostat were correct. When I heard the noise, I asked her to call the HVAC business. The cooling specialist arrived within the hour and went straight to inspect the ductless heat pump. After a while, the new contractor told her that she would have avoided such an issue with regular air conditioning tune-up. He also added that it was ideal that the service happened twice a year. I took the maintenance of my electric furnace seriously because I would not want to go back to the HVAC supplier to shop for a new air conditioning system simply because the one I had completely broken down sooner than I had anticipated. It was not all up to the cooling expert to ensure good indoor air quality and comfort. We also had a role to play when taking care of our systems. For instance, I always keep tabs on my HVAC duct, and duct sealing is one of the things I have learned to do very well.

A faulty mini split air conditioner almost ruined my engagement party

We had bought the best thermostat on the market, but that was as far as we had gone when it came to new air conditioning equipment

Nothing is more annoying and frustrating than a mini-split air conditioner that fails to work in the middle of bad weather. There was a winter when the ductless heat pump broke down the day we held our engagement party in our home. When I called the cooling specialist and explained my situation, they were prompt, and I was grateful for their quick response. That morning was awful because apart from the HVAC malfunction, I almost lost my ring loading the dishwasher. It fell and rolled to God-knows-where, and I spent two frustrating hours trying to find it. After inspecting the unit, the cooling expert gave me even more bad news. He told me that no heating repair could fix the mess that was my heating device. I tried my best to keep up with the air conditioning tune-up, but that unit was so old Teddy Roosevelt must have been in diapers when they installed it. I was planning to replace it with almost similar technology, but that was in a month. It was the only way to salvage the indoor air quality and our gateway to a zone control system. We had made arrangements with the new contractor from the local HVAC business on the date for the new installation. We had not even considered any equipment that involved an HVAC duct or duct sealing. The only thing we would not replace was the temperature control system. We had bought the best thermostat on the market, but that was as far as we had gone when it came to new air conditioning equipment. The party went on without further hitches.

Mistaken identity during a new air conditioning installation

Everybody at work calls me Billie.

When I was a new contractor, nobody who initially heard Billie thought it was a man.

My colleagues took a little bit of getting used to the name. The most recent incident was when I was installing a ductless heat pump. It was a last-minute assignment since the cooling specialist who was supposed to head the installation process had a last-minute emergency. We informed the homeowner about the matter, and he had no problem with the last-minute change. We told him that Billie would be the cooling expert on the job. During the installation, he came to me and asked if I could direct him to Billie. I just chuckled and told him that I was Billie, and the expression on his face was one that I was used to, but it always made me smile to see the shock. He went ahead to tell me that he had not met any lady who was an HVAC serviceman or taking part in the groundwork in the HVAC business. He apologized for the misunderstanding, and we went ahead to have our briefing on the mini split air conditioner installation. His brother accompanied him. The brother had a few questions for me that he needed. He told me he knew the way around the ductwork and his digital thermostat, and I even did duct sealing when I detected a leak in the HVAC duct. He was, however, having troubles with the temperature control system and asked if I could offer my services once I finished with the new air conditioning install. He also needed me to set up a zone control system and air conditioning tune-ups to improve indoor air quality.

My journey as a cooling specialist

Growing up, I was always the one who was ensuring that all taps were closed and they were not leaking.

Brushing my teeth with a running tap was unfathomable.

Any form of wastage, even in other things, was unacceptable to me. I got on everyone’s nerves, even if it was for a good cause. It continued until my parents and siblings were on board with the sustainable use of all available resources. My fascination with sustainable heating technology started in high school, and when I was after school, I joined an HVAC business as a cooling expert. The first new air conditioning installation I worked on was a ductless heat pump. Before that, I got the work of laying the HVAC duct or duct sealing when there was existing ductwork. The mini-split air conditioner was a much simpler installation since it was ductless. I was the first to install a smart thermostat in my parents’ house and set up a zone control system to help reduce the amount of energy used to heat and cool the home. With a new temperature control system, even the indoor air quality improved. With every new contractor I worked with, I learned something new. During my line of work, I met a cooling specialist who worked with geo heat pumps, and I felt right at home. He introduced me to his work and accompanied him to the sites he was working at and home services. I had gained a lot of knowledge. I could now work with the geosystems and the other types of equipment that relied on fossil fuels.

New air conditioning unit for the extra room.

We were in the process of adding a new room because my husband’s grandmother was coming to live with us.

At first, she had protested, saying she did not want to be a burden, but at her age, we would not let her live alone again.

We were her only living relatives nearby because my husband’s sister lives on a different continent. We would move some of the things she treasured to her new room and then sell the rest. With all the renovations we had done a few years back, including having the new contractor install new air conditioning equipment, which was always up to date on air conditioning tune-up, grandmother would get a good deal. Our home already had a dual fuel system, and when we consulted a cooling specialist, he advised us to install a ductless heat pump unit in the new room. It was the most straightforward option as there would be no need to put up any HVAC duct, and we would not need to worry about duct sealing in that room. The HVAC business gave us a date when they would deliver the equipment. The cooling expert and his team installed it the next day. All that was left was a heat pump service. Our grandmother would surely enjoy the indoor air quality in her new home. The heating business was right when they suggested the mini split air conditioner because she could easily adjust the temperature control system to her desired temperature settings. The thermostat only controlled the unit in her room, which was very convenient and enabled us to have a zone control system.

The wrong thermostat settings had turned the house into a sauna

My colleague had invited me to her house for dinner, so we went straight to her house instead of going home first.

When she opened the front door, it felt like we had walked into a sauna.

Her house had a ductless heat pump, but the temperature control system had to have a mind of its own to reach such high temperatures. She went straight to her thermostat and reset the temperatures like she would on a hot summer day. It was too late to call the HVAC business. Whitney decided to check the last time she had an air conditioning tune-up, and while she was at it, she saw that someone had set a timer to reset the temperature in the afternoon. She remembered giving her neighbor’s daughter her phone to play games. For once, I was glad I did not have an app on my phone where I could control the temperature settings of the new air conditioning system I recently had installed. The good thing was that we did not need a cooling specialist since all Whitney had already reset the system. In light of that incident, I remembered that the new contractor who did the installation at my house had shown me how to check the HVAC duct for leaks and in case there were any, she had shown me the best way to go about duct sealing. I was about to share that knowledge, but I remembered that Whitney’s house had a mini-split air conditioner. In about two hours, the system had restored good indoor air quality. In both our homes, we had insisted that the cooling expert set up a zone control system primarily because of its novelty. Still, we later learned its importance and energy efficiency.
