I kept hearing the dog yelp in the middle of the night, but I thought he was just having a nightmare.
I closed my eyes and went back to sleep, only to be awakened a few minutes later. I went downstairs to see what was wrong with the animals. When I saw him, I didn’t know if I wanted to laugh at him or cry for him. He had small burn marks on his face, where he had been chewing on the electrical cord that connected to the space heater. I was angry that he had destroyed the cord and the space heater would no longer work. The space heater was less than a year old, and now I needed to replace it. A part of me wanted to laugh at the dog. His head was hanging, and he had his paws over his eyes. I knew he didn’t mean to destroy anything. It was hard to look at the burns on his face, but he was the one who chewed on the cord. I looked at the cord and wondered why he hadn’t caught something on fire, which included himself. There were small burn marks on the carpet, which came from the sparking wire. My dog was lucky he didn’t burn up himself or my home. When the HVAC company ductwork cleaning crew arrived, they quickly cleaned the ductwork. They told me I needed to call the HVAC. With all the dirt they removed, it was possible the furnace may have overheated and been damaged. That was not something I wanted to hear.
